Being sick can take a toll on both your physical and mental well-being. While it's important to focus on getting better physically, it's equally crucial to pay attention to your mental health during this time. Here are five of my best tips on how to manage your mental health while being sick.

1. Self Compassion and Minimizing Task List

When you're feeling under the weather, it's easy to get frustrated with yourself for not being able to do your usual tasks or activities. However, it's important to remember that being sick is not your fault. Practice self-compassion by being kind and understanding towards yourself. Give yourself permission to rest and take the time you need to recover.

Order pizza so you don't need to do dishes, and try to reduce the amount of tasks you need to complete. I personally get anxious when things are a mess or disorderly in my home so for me to be able to relax, I need to have a clean space. That sometimes means shoving something in the cupboard so it is out of sight and out of mind. Your priority should be getting better, and reorganizing your kitchen can wait :)

2. Stay Connected

While being sick, it's common to feel isolated and lonely. To combat these feelings, make an effort to stay connected with your loved ones. Reach out to friends and family through phone calls, video chats, or even text messages.

It is best to avoid doom scrolling through social media apps as this does not help you connect with people. Doom scrolling can hurt your mental health especially if you are under the weather because social media is a "highlight" real of people's lives. You would be scrolling through the best snippets of people's lives while you are feeling low. This is an important distinction to make, so when I suggest connecting with people remotely, that means having actual conversations with people you know. This does not mean scrolling through people's highlight reals.

3. Fight Boredom While Being Sedentary

When you're feeling unwell, it's important to find ways to relax and reduce stress. I suggest cuddling up in front of a TV and binging a show until you're feeling better. This way you are tuned into something but also letting your body rest.

4. Seek Support

If you're struggling with your mental health while being sick, don't hesitate to seek support. Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or even a mental health professional. They can provide guidance, a listening ear, and help you navigate through emotional challenges you may be facing. When your routine is disrupted, your body physically does not feel well, you may be feeling lethargic or sore, it is normal to start feeling down emotionally. You are not operating at your optimal capacity and reaching out to your support system just to vent or have a laugh may be exactly what you need.

5. Focus on Small Achievements and Remember This is Temporary

When you're sick, it's easy to feel like you're not accomplishing anything. However, it's important to acknowledge and celebrate even the smallest achievements. Whether it's taking a shower, preparing a simple meal, or completing a small task, each accomplishment deserves recognition. By focusing on these small wins, you can boost your mood and maintain a sense of productivity. In addition, just remember this is temporary! This yucky feeling is temporary and you will be back to being yourself again.

Conclusion

Managing your mental health while being sick is essential for your overall well-being. By practicing self-compassion, staying connected, engaging in intentional relaxation, seeking support, and focusing on small achievements, you can better navigate through this challenging time. Remember, your mental health matters, and taking care of it will contribute to a faster recovery and a healthier mindset.
