Seeing a therapist has become increasingly common in today's society. Many people, including myself, have found immense value in seeking professional help for mental and emotional well-being. In this blog post, I want to share my personal experience with therapy and explain why I believe everyone can benefit from seeing a therapist.
One of the most important lessons I've learned through therapy is that it's okay to ask for help. We live in a society that often glorifies self-sufficiency and independence. I am not going to lie, that was my perspective and still is to some degree. The truth is, we all face challenges and struggles that can be difficult to navigate alone. Humans are not meant to survive alone when we can thrive together. Just because you are surviving does not mean you are at your optimal state of being. Seeking therapy is a brave and proactive step towards taking care of yourself. It is not a sign of weakness, or quite frankly people would not be so scared of it. If it was "the easy thing to do" then people would not feel so apprehensive about it.
Being in the mental health field, I have been open to the idea but had issues with insurance coverage and time management that pushed therapy off to the side. Now that I am on track with seeing a therapist regularly, I find that weekly or bi-weekly check-in so helpful. The helpfulness of it entirely depends on me though. I prefer non-structured sessions so if I choose to spend the hour ranting about the cost of groceries or if I want to delve deeper is entirely up to me. Both are productive but in their own way.
Therapy provides a safe and non-judgmental space where I can freely express my thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Unlike talking to friends or family, therapists are trained professionals who are unbiased and objective. They are there to listen, understand, and support us without any preconceived notions or personal biases.
One of the most valuable aspects of therapy is gaining self-awareness. Through conversations with a therapist, we can explore our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in a deeper and more meaningful way. This self-reflection helps us understand ourselves better, identify patterns, and make positive changes in our lives.
Life can be challenging, and we all face difficult situations at times. Therapy equips us with valuable coping strategies to navigate these challenges effectively. Whether it's managing stress, dealing with grief, or improving communication skills, therapists can provide us with practical tools and techniques to cope with life's ups and downs. I find that pausing and dedicating an hour a week to debriefing about life is one of the most powerful coping skills, and therapy provides that space for me.
We all have certain patterns or behaviors that may be holding us back from living our best lives. Therapy can helps us identify and break these unhealthy patterns. Whether it's negative self-talk, self-sabotaging behaviors, or toxic relationships, therapists can guide us towards healthier alternatives and support us in making positive changes. I find that I overwork myself, overexert myself and ignore signs of burn out.
In addition to that, the quality of our relationships greatly impacts our overall well-being. Therapy can help us improve our relationships by enhancing our communication skills, setting healthy boundaries, and resolving conflicts effectively. Whether it's our romantic relationships, friendships, or family dynamics, therapy can provide valuable insights and guidance.
Seeing a therapist has been a transformative experience for me, and I believe it can be for everyone. Therapy offers a safe and non-judgmental space to explore our thoughts, gain self-awareness, develop coping strategies, break unhealthy patterns, and improve our relationships. It's okay to ask for help, and seeking therapy is a powerful step towards taking care of our mental and emotional well-being. So, why not give it a try? You deserve to live a happier and healthier life.
Telehealth has revolutionized the way therapy is accessed, making it more convenient and accessible for individuals. The advent of telehealth technology allows people to receive therapy sessions from the comfort of their own homes, eliminating the need for travel or commuting. This has been particularly beneficial for those living in remote areas or with limited mobility, who may have previously found it challenging to attend in-person therapy sessions. Additionally, telehealth has reduced the barriers of stigma or embarrassment that some individuals may have felt when seeking therapy. The ability to access therapy through video calls or online platforms has made it easier for people to reach out for help and receive the support they need. Overall, telehealth has significantly increased the accessibility and availability of therapy, ensuring that more individuals can access the mental health care they require.
